The company Oceans Ecostructures presents the challenge of designing and manufacturing submarine recovery modules for installation in ports and open-water structures such as platforms or wind turbines.
The 100% ceramic structure must withstand the onslaught of the sea and maintain an open pore structure for marine plant species to take root.
The interior must be a set of channels and spaces that invite benthic species to inhabit them.
The use of concrete is ruled out due to the acidification of the marine environment that the material causes, as well as the polluting process it entails. Steel and metal are also ruled out, in favor of a ceramic that can provide the benefits of a natural rock.
The structure, designed as an interlocking puzzle, is printed with ceramic Robocasting technology, leveraging the expertise in materials held by the Barcelona3Dceramics workshop.
A realistic, resistant, and open-pore rocky structure is achieved, which proves to function perfectly.
The same structure incorporates technical ceramic anchoring keys where biologists can attach ceramic culture plates with the seeds of the plants they choose to repopulate.
